The full moon was just passing its peak in the sky, presiding over tonight's usual dreary city scene. A dark, rainy monotony of buildings and shops, -all long closed at this hour- broken intermittantly and abruptly by the neon-lit, noise-filled clubs and bars of the mainstreets. But not here. Not in the back-alleys and lost streets of the city.
The sounds of breaking glass and shouting were nothing unusual here; just the noises of the night to the people who lived here. Those who locked safe in their houses at night passed it off as muggers and drunks, and knew nothing themselves of the true beasts of the night. Naieve, perhaps... but tonight, a girl who called herself Lexix wished more than anything to be in somone else's place. She tripped, staggered, stumbled exhausted through piles of old boxes and the general rubbish which cluttered the maze of alleyways. Everything ached, there was no time to stop running as she heard, felt it gaining fast. Yet her legs refused to give another step, annd instead Lexix turned, grasped clumsily for the pistol at her side and faced her pursuer.
It was probably an entire three seconds before the beast, from an almost calculated running start leapt up and slammed its prey down onto the ground. She knocked its muzzle away just short of her neck before the creature, snarling, panting, bit down hard on her upper shoulder... sending waves of brilliant, agonising, all-consuming pain racing down her arm and like pins and daggers through her ribs; ending in a hideous 'crunch' of splitting bone.
"Fucking shit-!" she hissed, and surely would have screeched if not for teeth clenched tight in agony.
Drawing back its head the beast released its grip. If a wolf could smile this one did; as hazel-yellow eyes met, momentarily with those of its gasping, bleeding victim... and then as if finally savouring the last moments of the hunt, the she-wolf reached in for the neck; to deliver the killing bite and snuff out what life remained.
